Genealogy of the Ślebarski family
The family name „Ślebarski” is very rare in Poland, currently 13 people bear it (the data from 2010), including 12 living in Poland and one Ślebarski in Great Britain (St. Andrews, Scotland).
Until the beginning of the 19th century, the family lived in Podhale in Szlembark and in Harklowa, near Nowy Targ. The surname derives from the name of the village Szlembark.
The original sound of the surname „Ślebarski” - associated with the dialectal name of the village Szlembark (Ślebark) - has been changed into other forms: Ślebarski, Szlembarski, Szlebarski or Slemboski (in the USA). Since the beginning of the 20th century, the original name „Ślebarski” has given rise to three surnames: Ślebarski, Szlembarski and Ślembarski, which are still used today.
Currently, there are in Poland around 220 Szlembarskis, 12 Ślebarskis and five Ślembarskis (data from 2010). The Szlembarskis, who constitute the largest representation of the family, live mainly in Podhale.
At the end of XIX and at the begining of XX centuries the family emigrated in large numbers to the USA, where currently there are 7 Szlembarski families, several Szlebarskis and 10 Slembarski families. The distorted surname of the emigrant Wojciech Ślebarski (Slebarski Vojueck) has started a fairly large Slaboski family, mostly living in the Los Angeles area.
The Ślebarski family was brought to Oświęcim by priest Canon Michał Ślebarski, who received his first position here: first as a vicar, and from 1823 as a parish priest. In the 19th century, the Ślebarski family was very wealthy and mainly engaged in trade in Oświęcim. Konstanty Ślebarski was a councilor of the city of Oświęcim until 1868. His son Michał was also a councilor of the city of Oświęcim.
At the beginning of the 19th century, Canon Michał Ślebarski built a magnificent house for the family at the city market square, which is still known as „the Ślebarski house”. Rev. Michał is also the founder of the parish church in Włosienica near Oświęcim.
In the first half of the 19th century, the Ślebarski family owned a significant landed estate in the vicinity of the city and the Wywalicha, in which was also a post office.
In the parish cemetery in Oświęcim, the Ślebarski family built a chapel, where funeral services are held to this day. Part of the family was buried under this chapel, and Rev. Canon Michał Ślebarski is also buried there.
At the end of the 19th century, the Ślebarski house and the remaining property were sold. Aleksander Ślebarski bought land in Brzeszcze near Oświęcim and a house in which he set up a shop.
